Why this order works

A messy room gets easier when you clean it in the order that changes the most for the least effort. Every checklist on this page follows the same path:

  1. Trash. It needs no decisions, and every bag out makes room for the rest.
  2. Dishes. Cups and plates spill and smell, and carrying them out clears whole surfaces.
  3. Laundry. Clothes are usually the biggest pile. One basket turns a floor of clothes into one thing.
  4. Putting things away. With the big piles gone, what’s out of place is easy to spot.
  5. The bed. It’s the biggest thing in the room, so a made bed calms everything around it.
  6. Surfaces. Clear the tops first, then wipe, so you’re not wiping around stuff.
  7. Fixtures. Sinks, mirrors, screens: the shiny bits that make a room look cared for.
  8. Floor. Last, because everything above it drops dust and crumbs. Clothes on the floor already went with the laundry.
  9. Finishing touches. Curtains open, trash out, one look around. That’s how you know you’re done.

Tips for keeping going

  • Race the timer, not the room. Each step has its own short timer. The rest of the list can wait.
  • Skip freely. If a step doesn’t fit your room, tap Not this one and you’ll get another from the same part of the order.
  • Stopping counts. Five minutes of steps is a real clean. This page keeps your checkmarks on your phone, so you can come back to the list later today.
  • Low on energy? Pick Low and you’ll get steps you can mostly do sitting down or with things within reach, or try the low energy cleaning task picker.
  • Look back. Before you stop, look at one spot you changed. Seeing it makes the next clean easier to start.

Common questions

Where do I start cleaning a messy room?

With trash. It needs no decisions, it’s quick, and every bag out makes room for the rest. Then carry out the cups and dishes, and drop the clothes on the floor into one basket. Those first three moves change most rooms more than anything else.

What order should I clean a messy room in?

Trash, dishes, laundry, putting things away, the bed, surfaces, fixtures like the sink or mirror, then the floor, then a few finishing touches. The floor goes last because everything above it drops dust and crumbs.

How long does it take to clean a messy room?

Less than it feels like. Most tiny steps take between 20 seconds and 3 minutes, so a 15-minute checklist here has somewhere between 10 and 20 of them, and that’s enough to change how a room feels. Pick the time you have and the checklist never goes over it.

What if I have no energy to clean?

Pick Low. You’ll get steps you can mostly do sitting on the bed or the couch, or with things within reach, like gathering the cups or tossing the trash next to you. Five minutes of that still counts.

How do I clean a room that’s a total disaster?

Pick Disaster. The checklist starts with moves that need no decisions: one bag for trash only, one basket for clothes, a clear path from the door. You don’t have to finish the room today. A path and an empty floor are a great first clean.

Can I print this checklist?

Yes. Make your list, then use your browser’s Print (on iPhone: Share, then Print). It prints just the checklist, with empty boxes to tick.

Does this work for a kid’s or teen’s room?

Yes. Pick Bedroom. Every step is one concrete action with its own time, so there’s nothing vague like “clean your room”, and the printed list gives them boxes to tick.

Is this checklist free? Do I need an account?

It’s free, with nothing to sign up for, and it works on your phone. Your choices and checkmarks stay on your device. Mopkin, the iPhone app that does this from a photo of your room, is free too, with no account.
